World Masters of Projection Mapping

Tech

I was the technical lead for the World Masters of Projection Mapping, a large-scale projection competition presented by the City of Amsterdam, BeamSystems, and the EYE Filmmuseum. The event brought together five leading international video artists to create site-specific projection works, mapped onto the complex, multi-faceted façade of the EYE Filmmuseum and, later, onto a water screen on the adjacent IJ river.

The project used a Disguise media server system to UV-map and play back content on a 3D model of the building, coordinated across 13 high powered projectors (ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 lumens), installed in climate-controlled enclosures and networked via fibre-optic links. I was responsible for the full technical setup, including projection blending, show programming, and system automation. Each evening, the show ran via timecoded scheduling, turning on and off automatically for the duration of the three-week festival.

This was a highly complex mapping project on a non-uniform architectural surface with no flat planes, requiring intensive planning and collaboration. It would not have been possible without the expertise and dedication of the broader team across Indyvideo, BeamSystems, and partners including Panasonic, Disguise, Alcons Audio, and Lightware. The project culminated in a public showcase and awards event during ISE 2018.
