Pap Bilong Chimbu

Audio

Papa Bilong Chimbu is a 54-minute documentary tracing the extraordinary life of German missionary Father John Nilles, who arrived in the Chimbu Highlands of Papua New Guinea in 1937 and remained there for over five decades. Through archival photos, diaries, letters, and interviews, the film paints a portrait of a man who became a deeply embedded figure in the community—regarded not merely as a priest, but also as an anthropologist, linguist, and political leader.

As sound editor and mixer, I worked across three languages—English, German, and Tok Pisin—shaping a coherent and immersive aural environment that supported the documentary’s layered narrative and emotional resonance. The project required sensitivity to both archival material and contemporary interviews, and an ability to balance spoken content with ambient and musical elements to enhance storytelling across cultural contexts.
